Draft Day 2, Rounds 2&3: Which Direction could Washington go

By Anthony McCree II

The first round of the 2015 NFL Draft is done and the Skins decided to go with Brandon Schreff out of Iowa in an attempt to bolster their offensive front for years to come.

That pick has caused some stir in Skins nation, some love it some don't very much love it, for a multitude of different reasons, but I have to say, though I would like to have a guy like Leonard Williams out of USC, I'm not upset with that pick.

They need to start protecting their biggest investments, and picking the guy many viewed as the best offensive lineman in the draft, to help protect the QB that they could possibly owe over 16 mil to in 2016 is a great start toward that.

Today, will be where we will see what the Skins will do in the 2nd and 3rd rounds. There is still a lot of talent available that can have an impact on the teams future. Let's highlight a few of the guys that will be available come round 2 and possibly still available for the Skins in round 3.

Round 2

Landon Collins /S/ Alabama

Collins was a favorite among Washington fans to be picked in the first round, so among many of them and maybe even Collins himself (He's a big Skins fan)  this could be considered a good thing that he's still available. He's got an aggressive demeanor, is very good against the run, and has the tools to play well in coverage, though he hasn't done so at times, preferably he's an in the box safety too me, where his skills can be best utilized best.

Devin Funchess /WR,TE/ Michigan

This is a guy with Size, Speed, and Power, He played in the slot and outside at Michgan, all the while playing both Tight end and Receiver, their were some speed questions in terms of him actually playing wide out in the NFL, but many of those were answered when he ran a 4.47 at his pro day, He only ran a 4.70 at the combine prior, but to be honest, I don't care about that, he beat press coverage with ease, and can play TE and be a serious mismatch problem playing with Jordan Reed and Niles Paul, or even, if Reed gets hurt as he unfortunately has done every year since he's been in the league.

Eli Harold /OLB/ Virginia

An explosive pass rusher, who can play with his hand in the round or standing up, this type of versatility will be needed within our defense, He had 17.5 sacks total his last two seasons and last year had 14.5 tackles for loss, so he's doing a very good hob not only against the pass, but the rush as well.

A.J. Cann /OG/ South Carolina

I can here it now coming from some people "Ohhh Nooo Not Again!" But really, if they took an offensive lineman with back to back picks would this be the worse thing ever?? I don't think it would be, They've had one of the worst offensive lines in the world for what? A decade or some sh-t like that I don't know? But Cann is a very good prospect, strong, yet pretty good athleticism for a guard, could fit well with the Skins seemingly moving to a power scheme.

Round 3

Hau'oli Kika /OLB/ Washington

A pure pass rusher, Judo background, so he's very good with his hands and understand leverage. The knock on him is he's considered a pass rush specialist, AKA " one-trick pony", considering he probably wouldn't start anyway over Trent Murphy, this wouldn't be so bad, to have a pass rusher with his talents enter the game on passing downs.

Stefon Diggs /WR/ Maryland

A talented slot receiver with loads of potential, they Skins did sign Andre Roberts last year, but that hasn't worked out well enough to this point. They also had trouble finding ways to get Garcon open in their new scheme under Gruden, if, Garcon ends up trade bait, Roberts would become the outside target that he expected to be before the unexpected release from Philly ,and then, unexpected signing of Desean Jackson by Washington. Leaving a hole in the slot receiver spot that diggs could potentially fill.

Tre' Jackson /OG/ Florida State University

A powerful drive blocker, who fits a power scheme, his performance did slip some last year, and this is why his value dropped when it was once believed he could be the best guard in the class. Much of that is believed to be due to conditioning, not uncommon in terms of offensive line though, with some coaching, I think he could be a force within out system.

A Few Key Points

Take a second to entertain what a few of these scenarios could look like for Washington's football team.

first the offensive line from left to right potentially, and let's also think about Brandon Schreff's versatility as well:

Trent Williams,  A.J. Cann,  Kory Lichtensteiger,  Brandon Schreff,  Morgan Moses

or

Trent Williams, Brandon Schreef, Kory Lichtensteiger, Tre' Jackson, Morgan Moses

or (the most likely scenario at this point, because of coaches statement and contracts)

Trent Williams, Shaun Lavao, Kory Lichtensteiger, Morgan Moses, Brandon Schreff

this could end up in almost any type of order, various things, can happen, but either way building this unit is good.

If Eli Harold or Hau'oli Kika are added to the mix we've got an interesting look that can possibly applied in third down sets. they can easily have depth enough to multiple fronts.
